Money might not be everything in life, but it does come in handy. If you’re just starting out and hoping to live a comfortable lifestyle then you might be wondering what major should I pick if I want to make a lot of money? Here are some options that will get you that big paycheck you’re looking for.

What Major Should I Pick If I Want to Make a Lot of Money

Keep in mind, you shouldn’t pick a major just because you will make a lot of money.

If you hate what you do, then no amount of money will make up for it.

Try to find something you’re passionate about that also pays well. If you can do that then you will not only have a comfortable life but a happy one too.

Here are 9 majors that will make you a lot of money.

1. MBA

An MBA is a graduate degree, of course, so you would want to consider a bachelor’s in finance or business management or some other business major.

But, plan on going to graduate school if you want to get a high-paying career in business.

The top jobs are at the C-suite level.

That’s things such as CEO, COO, and CTO.

You’re not going to get there on day one.

It will take a lot of hard work and long days, but it is certainly worth it.

CEOs of smaller companies make $450,000 dollars to about $1.5 million dollars a year.

However, if you make it to the level of a CEO of a Fortune 500 company then your salary will be in the tens of millions.

With stock options, you might even make $100 million or more per year.

As a college major you can’t go wrong here.

Even at the lower end of the C-suite, you will be making enough money to be in the 1 percent of earners.

2. Engineering

Engineering is one of the great career paths.

You’ll always have a job if you are good at what you do.

You don’t even need a graduate degree to make good money.

So, if you are good with math you should consider this college major.

The average starting salary is $71,000 dollars for someone with a 4-year degree.

My cousin just graduated college with an engineering degree two years ago.

His starting salary was $75,000 and now, two years later, he has been promoted and is making $90,000.

3. Law

Being a lawyer is a lot of people’s goals.

It is tough work and critical thinking needs to be one of your strong suits.

The thing about being an attorney is that salary ranges are all over the place.

Who you work for, where you live, and what type of law you practice is going to have a major impact on your income.

If you are an assistant DA you will most likely be making around the $50,000 dollar mark.

On the other hand, if you work in corporate law you’ll be making anywhere from $100 thousand to $300 thousand dollars per year once you get some experience.

A defense attorney will make about the same as a corporate lawyer.

However, it will all depend on where you live.

If you live in a tiny town in the middle of the country, your salary will be much lower than working for a large firm in a big city.

Of course, you will need to get into law school after your bachelor’s degree.

4. Doctors

When it comes to medicine and being a doctor, the job outlook is good and you will make good money.

You will also have high student loan debt if you’re like most medical students.

It can be as high as $250,000 dollars.

So, plan on spending your first few years paying off those debts and living on a budget.

Once you get going, however, you should be making between $160 to $220 thousand dollars a year.

5. Nurse Practitioners

If you don’t want to go through all the work to be a doctor, you should consider being a nurse practitioner.

Yes, it is still a lot of work to get through the program, but you can do it faster than being a doctor.

Also, nurse practitioners make really good money.

You can expect to make anywhere between $100 and $130 thousand dollars per year.

Chances are you will either work at a hospital or at a doctor’s office.

This can be a great career goal.

6. Anesthesiologist

Now, if you want to go into medicine and make a lot of money, you should consider being an anesthesiologist.

This is the person that puts you to sleep when you have surgery.

They have a very important and difficult job.

If they do something wrong, you might not wake back up.

Even so, they are well paid for their services.

The average anesthesiologist makes between $300 and $500 thousand dollars per year.

Spend some time with career counselors to see what science majors would be best if you want to go this route.

I have a friend that is a nurse anesthesiologist and she makes $200 thousand dollars a year.

7. Political Science

If you like politics then you might want to consider a degree in political science.

There are a lot of career options such as working in the government or even becoming a politician yourself.

The median salary is $65,000 dollars, so it pays pretty well too.

Just like a doctor, the pay is good.

Your salary will depend on where you live and if you specialize or not.

Even so, you can expect to make anywhere between $130 to $200 thousand a year or more.

9. Finance

Finance is one of those careers where you have a variety of career options.

The average annual salary for a finance degree is $60,000 but it can be much higher.

If you decide to be a stockbroker, then the sky’s the limit.

You can make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year or even a million or more if you are really good at your job.

Or, you can work in a bank, but your salary will be on the lower end of things.

It really is up to you.
