How to Save Money on Vacation

Saving money on vacation is easier than you might think. Just use a couple of these tips to save money on your vacation and you can really cut your costs.

1. Take Your Trip Out of Season

By traveling during the off-season, you’ll save yourself from the expenses of high travel costs.

Granted, it might not be as much fun traveling to a place out of season, but it will be less expensive.

Also, there won’t be as many crowds which is always a good thing.

Even so, plan carefully so you can still enjoy yourself. You don’t want to end up in the wrong place at the wrong time of year.

For example, I went to South Korea once.

It was in January…

If you’ve never been there then you might be surprised at just how cold it is.

You might also be surprised to realize they don’t really heat buildings the same way we do in the United States.

To say I was freezing is an understatement.

This was not the time to go there, but I do have to say that the people there were kind and welcoming.

 2. Rent a House

Consider staying in a house or apartment to save money on hotel fees.

You can also cook and entertain yourself while saving money.

You’ll save money on food by cooking.

If you invite some friends along, you can share the cost of the house and save even more.

3. Keep Luggage to a Minimum

If you decide to travel out of state, try traveling without checking your luggage at all and only pack what you need for the trip and leave anything else behind.

Flying is cheaper if you don’t check your luggage.

Leave your overpacking days behind you.

If you forget something or need something you didn’t pack, you can always buy it when you arrive at your destination.

4. Use Travel Apps

If you’re comfortable using a phone app, there are many travel apps that can help you find the cheapest deals on flights, hotels, rental cars, and more.

Download one before you leave so you have it handy when ready to book.

You can use it while you travel as well to find places to explore, maybe for free or tours to take.

If you reserve your place last minute you might find a deal. Of course, you might miss out as well.

5. Take Food With You

Instead of eating out, bring along snacks and other foods from home.

Not only will you save money, but you’ll also be more self-sufficient.

When I go to the beach in Florida, I always get a room with a small refrigerator.

That way I can buy stuff to eat for breakfast, such as milk and cereal, and lunch such as stuff for sandwiches.

That way, I can eat two of my meals each day at the hotel and it saves me a bunch of money on eating out.

When my sister and I went to Paris, France, our hotel room didn’t have a fridge, but we were on the second floor and there was a tiny balcony outside our window.

So, we hit the grocery store down the street and bought meat and cheese, and chocolate of course, and left it out on the balcony.

It was in the winter, so it was cold enough to keep everything fresh.

Considering how expensive it is to eat in Paris, it saved us a great deal of money.

6. Don’t Get a Rental Car

Renting a car to get around is unnecessary if there’s public transportation or another affordable option available to you.

Instead, consider all options before choosing a rental car, even walking if it’s possible.

If you feel you must get a rental car, wait until you get to your hotel.

Don’t rent a car at the airport.

They have the most expensive rates.

Take the shuttle to the hotel and then get a car at that point.

A lot of rental car agencies will pick you up at the hotel and take you back there when you return the rental.

7. Limit Your Souvenir Shopping

If you’re looking for souvenirs, check out local stores for deals to save money on tourist shops where prices can be very costly.

If you have a set budget, only buy souvenirs that fit within your budget so you don’t go over.

Keep in mind that most souvenirs are kind of cheesy and made cheaply.

Doesn’t your Aunt Millie really need something from your trip? Most likely not.

Instead of souvenirs, send postcards. It is cheaper and will be appreciated just as much.

Check out local websites for people who may need someone to care for their home while they’re gone.

This way you can have a great vacation without the cost of a hotel.

This can save you hundreds of dollars.

If you can find a house sitting opportunity in an area where you want to travel, do it.
