If you’re thinking about becoming a freelance writer then chances are you might be wondering how much can freelance writers make per article. The answers are all over the place. That’s because it will depend on your level of experience, what you’re writing and who you are writing for.
How Much Can Freelance Writers Make Per Article
As I said, freelance writing rates are all over the place. Some writers work for as little as 2 cents per word. I wouldn’t recommend that you do that.
Other writers make several dollars per word. That’s where you want to be.
But let’s look into why there is such a wide range of pay and what you can do to make sure your on the high end of the scale.
Who You Write for Makes a Difference
There are a lot of different types of content you can write.
One of the easiest to write and one of the easiest ways to get started in this business is to write articles, but what do I mean by that?
When we talk about articles, we typically mean writing an article or blog post for a website.
These websites break down into two types. (I’m sure there are more, but these are the two that are important for you.)
The first is articles for a niche website such as this one. A niche website talks about a specific subject.
For example, The Money Pixie deals with money issues. That can be how to pay off debts, how to save money, or even how to make money.
The articles written for this website have something to do with money as that is my niche.
The second type of website that you need to consider is a website for a brick-and-mortar business.
This could be a website for a plumber or an accountant or even a consulting firm.
Regardless of the business, chances are they are selling a physical object or a service.
Their blog is there to generate sales while a niche website makes money from ads and affiliate offers for the most part.
Articles and Blog Posts Pay the Smallest Amount
Most freelance writers receive the lowest rate per word for short articles and blog posts.
If you try to write for a niche site owner, you won’t make much money.
On the low end, you will get paid 2 to 3 cents per word and on the high end, you will earn 8 to 10 cents a word.
Since most niche site owners want articles to be between 1,500 and 2,000 words, at 3 cents per word you would make $45 dollars to $60 dollars per article.
On the high end at 8 cents per word you would make $120 to $160 dollars for the same article.
The work is the same, but you will make more if you can find someone to pay you the 8 or 10 cents per word.
That means you need to stay away from content mills. There you will end up earning 2 or 3 cents per word.
Most niche site owners won’t pay much more than that unless you are an expert in their niche and have lots of experience.

Blogs for Businesses
Now, if you are writing that same article for a company that has a blog on their website, you can usually earn much more money.
That’s because most businesses understand the value you bring to their business.
They know that if you write a good article that it will bring people to their website. Those people will sign up for their newsletters (which you can also write) or and then eventually buy what they are selling.
If they sell a product that costs $500 dollars then they are much more willing to pay you top dollar for your writing. They will see the cost as an investment instead of an expense.
For that same 1,500 word article, you might get 25 cents per word or more. That means you’d make $375 dollars for the same article that a niche website owner would have paid you $45 to $120 dollars for.
That’s why it is super important for you to understand that not all clients are the same.
What You Write Makes a Difference As Well
Yes, the question we’re addressing is how much freelance writers make for an article, but it is also important to realize that there are other things you can write.
And…most of them pay more than writing articles.
Once you have a little experience you should consider writing:
- White papers
- Case studies
- Email series
- Sales letters
and so on…
You might need a little education to learn how to write this type of content, but it really isn’t any more difficult than writing an article.
Also, the pay is much better.
You’re looking at earning thousands of dollars instead of hundreds of dollars for a project that won’t take you much more time.
Freelance Writing Rates: How Much Can You Charge?
How much you can charge for a freelance writing job depends upon several factors, including the type of project, your experience level as a writer, and the length of time that you take to write the project.
One of the great things about being a freelance writer is that you can decide what you want your rates to be.
You don’t have a boss telling you how much you can earn.
It’s all up to you.
First, you need to have a general idea about how much time it takes you to write and research an article.
Then you need to determine how much you can write in a day or a week keeping in mind you will need to spend time on other tasks such as marketing for new clients.
Finally, you will need to know how much you need to make to pay all your monthly expenses.
These three things will determine what you need to charge.
Once you have this number, then go out there and find clients that will pay those rates.
Trust me, they are out there.
The bottom line is it is all up to you. You can work for a content mill and make pennies or you can find your own clients – people that have businesses – and get paid hundreds of dollars for the same amount of work.
