Blogging as a Career – Possible? Surprise it Sure Is

Have you ever thought about blogging as a career? I bet you have. It was always a dream of mine and now it has become a reality, but how much of a reality is it for you?

The truth is, blogging as a side hustle or even blogging as a career full-time can be wonderful. No bosses…no co-workers…no time schedules…and no driving anywhere to make a living.

Of course, there are some downsides as well, but let’s take a look at all of it and see if it is right for you.

Blogging as a Career – The Pros

1.You don’t have to talk to anyone – If you’re an introvert like I am, it’s nice to be able to make a living without having to spend 8 hours a day, or more, interacting with other people.

Instead, you can spend your time in ways that you’ll find more comfortable like working on the computer, writing, and planning your blog’s next move.

Of course, if you like interacting with people all the time, you’ll want to find ways to do that. A coffee shop is a great place to be around people and still get some work done, or partnering up with another blogger can be a great option as well.

2. You can make money the way you want to – There are plenty of options to make money from your blog. It’s really up to you and what you feel works best for you and your brand.

For example, on this blog, I make money from affiliate sales and ads, but those are really only the beginning. Once you have an audience, you can create and sell your own courses.

You can take on coaching clients, write for other blogs, accept sponsored posts, and more.

money rolled up on a tableSo, if you’ve been wondering, do bloggers make money, yes they certainly do.

Some bloggers make 10’s of thousands of dollars monthly and some even make 100’s of thousands monthly.

When it comes to how much money can you make from a blog, the sky is truly the limit.

3. You can make money from your passion – While it’s true that not all blog niches will make you money, chances are you can take one of your passions and start blogging as a career in your area of interest.

That’s certainly better than working 40 hours a week at a job you hate.

When you pick your blog topic you’re going to need to do a little research on types of blogs that make money, because you don’t want to spend a great deal on time and energy on a topic that no one but you cares about or there is no way to make a living from.

Even so, even small niche topics can be turned into blogging as a full-time career.

For example, I know one blogger that blogs about coffee and has made over $250k from his blog.

Who knew you could make full-time blogger income talking about coffee and coffee makers!

Blogging as a Career – The Cons

1. You won’t make money overnight – I know you’ve read all the blogging income reports (I have too!) and it seems that people start their blog on Monday and by Friday they are making $10K a month. If only…

The truth is for most of us mere mortals it takes a lot of time and effort to start seeing any income at all. That’s why most people start their blog on the side and work a full-time day job.

It might take you a year, or longer, to make any money at all. closeup of laptop on a table with a notebook

There might be small amounts here and there like I had when I first started, but regular – monthly – income that you can count on takes time.

So, if you want to start blogging as a career and start making money immediately, you will want to blog for others first as a freelancer.

If that’s something you’re interested in, I’ve got a 4-part series that shows you just how to do that. You can find it here.

In fact, that’s how I made my full-time living for years, and from there, I decided it made sense for me to start blogging for myself.

The only thing I would change is starting sooner!

2. You may quit before you make it – Just imagine writing and publishing 2 or 3 blog posts every week for month after month with no real engagement – no clicks – no money – no email signups. That’s tough for anyone to deal with.

It also means you need to be motivated enough to hang in there with the knowledge that the hard work you are putting into your blog today will pay off someday.

Even if it feels like the day will never get here.

3. There is a learning curve – In my view, one of the major issues of starting a blog is being overwhelmed with information. There are 100’s of bloggers out there telling you what you MUST do to be a success, and not two of them are telling you the same thing.

It is really easy to spend too much time reading what others think you should do instead of actually doing anything. Information overload is real and when you start a new blog it is really difficult to avoid.

Not to mention, you will make mistakes that waste your time and possibly even your money.

It’s just part of learning what you need and don’t need with it comes to blogging for money.

Blogging for beginners can be really stressful. It’s a lot of fun too, but just do what you can to not get overwhelmed.

For me, I see blogging as a business and as a way not only to make a monthly income but as my retirement.

I put in the hard work now, and hopefully, it will pay off for years to come, so I won’t have to worry about pensions or social security.

I will have created my own pension with my blogs.

And for me, that’s the main reason blogging as a career works for me and is worth every minute of disappointment or struggle because I know that in the end, it is more than worth it.
